Free Willy..I mean software..

My tech hombre Joe will get a kick out of this snap I saw on the front page of the China Daily. This dude jumped on stage and held up a sign after Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates delivered a speech at Peking University in Beijing April 20, 2007. The sign reads "Free Software. Open Source. On the way to Tiananmen Square yesterday morning I saw a good 60% perhaps 80% of the billboards plastered with ads for the new Vista operating system I think it’s safe to say that Microsoft is pushing big in to China anyway should I come back to that China outsourcing software story?

Recollections of 15 years ago

Reunited

It’s been about 15 years since Mao and I have met. Gone are the bikes and my roller blades. It’s a different city and Im not a rock star anymore in this town. Oh well I looked for the Starbucks in the Forbidden City and could not find. I also did not ask any one either.

Original Art work and food

Normally when I go on trips i take pictures of the food. Im kicking myself for not getting a snap of the Roasted veal fillet, cream parsley and rosti finished in a ragout of veal sweebreads, chanterelles, truffle,Dijon mustard cream. Not to mention the appetizer of cappuccino of smoked salmon soup infused with fennel and dill soup.
However I got this snap of original art work from the club. My host Larry Wu from New Market China shared with me that many dignitaries that come to this club wish to purchase these and there NOT for sale. For more snaps go to the fiker site.

Your ride and appointment are waiting

A phone call to my room 5 minutes after I arrived in Beijing whisked me away to a dinner meeting with the Deputy Managing Editor of Caijing magazine. Caijing has a talent for exposing the less illuminated surface of the financial world here in China. The editor Ms Hu Shuli is widely respected for keeping her independence and is becoming more widely known.
A story that is not getting the foreign media attention is the rural movement by the Chinese government. Fascinating conversation and more posts later on this. Caijing has a version in English now.

Do you know the way to Beijing?

The New Market Team [NMKT] is moving north to Beijing today and of course Im rolling along with them. We are doing site visits and the theme will be software integration. New Market's man on the ground there Dr Wu is very knowledgeable and I have spoken to him before and looking forward to meeting him.
I will post on the Shanghai Rail Summit when I get back. Lots of material. Went to the Shanghai Stock Exchange yesterday in the midst of a correction. What was more telling is the pack of gentlemen that hang outside banks trading like a scene from the 1920’s.

Virginia Tech shooter and Shanghai connection

Went to the US State Department Public affairs office in Shanghai yesterday to ask about VT shooter nut job Cho Seung-hui. Lisa Evans from that office who greated me outside while the Chinese fast food was delivered declined to comment if the student visa was issued came from Shanghai. She did say however that she received many phone calls regarding this inquiry and for me to call the Virginia State Police. I was however the first person to knock on the door to ask in person. Today this story was on the front page of the China Daily. Chicago Sun Time’s Michael Sneed reported the wrong information on this and the media did a pile on. Im sure we will see more of this in the future...dont get faked out.

It rained last night so the streets were clean and the air was crisp. This time I got hit up by an “artist’ Chin Sha (Larry David look alike) and bought a water color of a tiger. Followed the hard hats to a construction site and got another version of the Chinese’s breakfast burrito .Morning time really is the best time to walk around an unfamiliar city.
